Villagers, friendships and gifts
Eleven villagers live in the village and relationships rise to Level 3 in Early Access. Chat and gift daily, use the relationship screens to track favourite gifts, and use the map when someone has wandered off.
Moonfrost ships with eleven villagers you can meet and befriend, and relationships improve up to Level 3 in Early Access. The relationships are the emotional spine of the game: the developers describe entire character arcs, romantic story events, and slice-of-life moments built around people who start guarded and open up as you get closer.

Who you can meet
Eleven NPCs live in the village in this build, and the developers have kept the specifics of the cast for players to discover — what they have said is that the cast mixes familiar faces from the demo with new ones, and that each villager has an arc planned. One name they discuss openly is Ash, who mocks everyone around them. The team's own advice is refreshingly blunt: if you cannot stand them, you can ignore them outside main story tasks, or even gift them trash. Their suggestion is also that you give Ash a chance — some characters start mean or guarded and become warmer as your relationship grows.
How relationships work
- Meet people first. Relationships only start moving once you have met a villager, and villagers move around the village on their own routines during the day.
- Chat. Conversation is the baseline action, and dialogue unlocks new lines as your relationship progresses.
- Gift. Gifts are a distinct action with their own preferences to learn.
- Track it. The relationship screens show how close you are, which gifts each villager likes, and which relationship events you have unlocked.
That tracking UI was one of the last systems the team was polishing before launch, and they described the goal as a screen that helps without overwhelming: somewhere you can look back on what you have learned about each character.
Finding villagers who moved
Because villagers have routines rather than fixed posts, the one you want is often not where you left them. Two things fix that:
- Use the in-game map. The map was rebuilt for Early Access and marks where villagers are.
- Use the villager list and relationship screens as a directory — they are the fastest way to check who you have already met.
Levelling up and what comes later
Friendships cap at Level 3 at launch. The Village Expansion update on the roadmap raises that to Level 5 and adds four new NPCs, so the relationship system is one of the parts of the game the developers expect to keep growing. If you are deciding when to start investing in friendships, now is the time — visit them daily and the pacing takes care of itself.
