Moonfrost Guide

Moonfrost NFT and blockchain history

Quick answer

The developers' FAQ answers it directly: Moonfrost has no NFTs or blockchain features and never will. Early in development it was planned as a free-to-play Web3 experience, and that model was dropped before the Steam release.

This is the question nearly every new Moonfrost player asks before buying: what was this game before? The developers answered it themselves in their pinned FAQ, and the answer is worth quoting in full rather than summarising.

The developers' own answer

Asked "Does Moonfrost have NFTs or any blockchain features?", the FAQ replies:

No. Moonfrost has no NFTs or any blockchain features and never will.

The team then explains the history in their own words. Early in development the game was originally planned as a free-to-play, live-service experience that included optional blockchain elements. The idea was that a small portion of players could support development by purchasing and trading certain items, while most players could enjoy a cosy life-sim for free. That concept helped fund the early stages, and an early access version of the game was released on a Web3 platform.

The FAQ continues that as Moonfrost evolved it became clear this direction was not the right fit. The team decided to step away from that model, remove the live-service and blockchain elements, and refocus on what they describe as a premium, offline, wholesome, story-driven experience.

What that means for the game on Steam

  • Moonfrost on Steam is a single-player, premium PC game. There is no in-game shop, no currency, no season pass and no wallet.
  • The only paid extra on the store page is the soundtrack DLC, $5.99 for 29 compositions by Shudan.
  • The store page lists Steam Cloud and Family Sharing — ordinary Steam features, not Web3 ones.
  • The FAQ also answers the adjacent worry directly: asked whether AI is used to create Moonfrost, the reply is "No", describing the game as handcrafted by humans over several years.

Why it still comes up

The pre-Steam history is real, and players who funded or followed the earlier version have raised it in the Steam discussions since launch — both as a warning to new buyers and as a question about what happens to people who bought into the old model. Both threads are public in the Moonfrost Steam discussions if you want to read them directly.

The honest position is that this is a documented pivot: a free-to-play Web3 plan that did not survive contact with the game's actual direction, replaced by a premium offline release. Whether that is enough is a judgement call for each player. What is not in question is what the current build contains — and the developers' answer to that is unambiguous.
